Terry wasn’t going to be pushed into revealing his real name, and if it weren’t for the ring situation, I’d have walked away. But as he said, what had I got to lose?

We parted, agreeing to meet at Meyer’s Turf Accountants on the Broxworth Estate on Monday morning, simply because I knew Joseph and Sam would be there with a potential buyer. A meeting I feared would be a disaster if this Terry bloke didn’t have the evidence that he suggested his friend had somehow obtained. Although his friend overheard that conversation in the Murderers Pub, Terry stated she wouldn’t be able to attend the meeting on Monday but would be there in spirit, whatever that meant.

The awful feeling about borrowing ten grand from Clive had to be resolved. So, after leaving the coffee shop, I decided to see if Terry was right about the value of my mother’s ring by obtaining a valuation from a reputable jeweller.

Herrington’s, a jewellery shop on Guild Hall Street, was one of those sorts of places that only displayed two or three carefully selected items in the window, beautifully presented with no price tag. Also, they employed a guard at the door who looked like one of those thugs you see in a Guy Richie London-gangster-type movie. So, I thought there might be a good place to start.

I hovered by the window, taken in by the display of a five-strand pearl necklace I assumed would be of a considerably higher value than the string Mrs Price had clutched earlier when mistaking Terry, or Richard, or whatever his bloody name is, to be my reincarnated father.

Whilst curling my fingers around the ring box tucked into my anorak pocket, I nodded to myself that it was time to part with the ring, take the cash and run. I’m sure my mother would want me to do this if she knew my current predicament.

I stepped towards the door and pressed the buzzer. The suited guard conducted a quick visual assessment of me as he touched an earpiece fitted to his left ear attached to a curly wire that disappeared down the collar of his suit, before glancing up at a bank of CCTV monitors above the door.

While waiting for the guard to decide if he would allow me into their prestigious shop, I caught the reflection in the glass door of two police officers striding towards me. Perhaps there’d been an incident, and the police had been called, thus explaining why there was a delay in the door opening.

“Excuse me.” I heard a male voice ask. Although I assumed the request wasn’t directed towards me, I turned to assess who had spoken.

Two male police officers loomed over me. As I glanced between their tunic epaulettes, about fifty yards along the street stood that weasel Maypole with his arms smugly folded whilst watching the event.

“Me?” I asked, pointing to my chest.

“Yes. We have information to suggest you’ve been involved in the theft of a certain item.
